plastic gears break easily
This would be a good product, except the gears that turn the grinder are cheap plastic and snap/break very easily. It included one spare set of gears, but I broke both of them within a short period of time, even though I trimmed the meat as well as I could and cut it in small pieces. The gears should have been metal...it's crazy to use plastic for something like that! So far, no luck finding spare one's for purchase.
not build to last
This unit was purchased at a "black Friday" sale and sat until out of warranty. The third use of it and one of the nylon gears in the drive unit broke. Yes, the gears are made of nylon.
A call to the customer service number was no help. I was informed they do not sell replacement parts, nor did they have any idea how to find any. A suggestion was made to contact a company in Utah. The Open County/Nesco website was no help. Two contact forms have been sent and I have yet to receive a reply of any kind.
This grinder is built for very, very light usage. It will not last and you will have wasted your money. If it says Open Country or Nesco, spend your money on something else.
Open Country 350 Watt Food Grinder
I got this for Christmas and it worked pretty good...until...
I thought I could help "clean" it out by running some crushed ice through it. Apparently one of the ice pieces was too much for it and it immediately stripped out a gear or something inside.
Thankfully the store we brought it from had a good return (exchange) policy and I swapped it for a new one.
Be careful not to let a stray piece of bone or something else hard (frozen meat?) go through...it could be the end of it.
Some different engineering on the inside or a overload shut off switch would be an improvement.
Does good for lighter jobs though and the price is reasonable.
